The Armenian Genocide Memorial at Tsitsernakaberd (1967), designed with Sashur Kalashyan and the artist Hovhannes Khachatryan, sets 12 inward-leaning stone slabs in a circle around an eternal flame, beside a 44-metre memorial column split in two to express the rebirth of the nation. After a competition in 1970 he was one of the six architects chosen to design the Zvartnots Airport Old Terminal (1980). The Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concert Complex (1983), shaped like a great bird opening its wings, has a turning stand of 1,008 seats that joins the arena and concert hall, an idea that won its architects the USSR State Prize.
