Michael Wilford (1938–2023) was an English architect who joined James Stirling's office in 1960 and became his partner in 1971; the Stirling/Wilford partnership lasted until Stirling's death in 1992. Wilford then led his own practices, Michael Wilford and Partners in Britain and Wilford Schupp in Stuttgart, designing performing arts centres, galleries, museums and libraries around the world. He taught at Yale, Harvard, Rice and many other schools, and was made a CBE in 2001.

With Stirling he designed the Clore Gallery, Tate Britain in London (1987) and the Stuttgart Music School (Musikhochschule) (1996). After Stirling's death he completed No 1 Poultry in London (1997). The Lowry in Salford (2000), a performing and visual arts centre largely clad in stainless steel and glass, won the Royal Fine Art Commission Building of the Year award in 2001. His practice also worked, with DP Architects, on Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay in Singapore (2002), whose two glass shells covered in more than 7,000 aluminium sunshades earned it the nickname "the Durian". Michael Wilford's buildings are studied for colourful public architecture made for crowds.
