Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868–1928) was a Scottish architect, designer and watercolourist from Glasgow who blended his Scottish background with the flourish of Art Nouveau and the simplicity of Japanese forms. With his wife Margaret Macdonald, her sister Frances Macdonald and Herbert MacNair he formed "The Four", leading figures of the Glasgow Style, and their work influenced Art Nouveau and the Secession movement across Europe. Late in life he gave up architecture for watercolour painting.

He studied in the evenings at the Glasgow School of Art and later designed its building (1909), which was badly damaged by fire in 2014 and destroyed by a second fire in 2018. His Glasgow Herald offices of 1895 are now The Lighthouse (Glasgow Herald Building), a design centre. The Willow Tearooms in Glasgow (1903) were made for the tea-room owner Catherine Cranston, and Scotland Street School (1906) has been a museum since 1990. The House for an Art Lover in Glasgow (1996) was built between 1989 and 1996 from a design he and Margaret Macdonald drew in 1901. Charles Rennie Mackintosh's buildings are studied for treating architecture, interiors and craft as one.
