Sou Fujimoto (born 1971) is a Japanese architect from Hokkaido, known for delicate, light structures and enclosures that are permeable to light, air and views. He graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1994 and opened Sou Fujimoto Architects in 2000. His 2008 book, Primitive Future, surveys his early projects and explains the idea behind them. His early houses in Japan made his name. Final Wooden House in Kumamoto (2008) grew from his winning entry to a 2005 wooden house competition, and House N in Oita (2008) followed the same year. In 2014 he designed a bus shelter for the BUS:STOP project in Krumbach, Austria. Larger works followed in Europe: L'Arbre Blanc in Montpellier (2019), a tower of flats, and the House of Music Hungary in Budapest (2022). Sou Fujimoto's projects are studied for light, open structures that blur the line between inside and outside.
